What if I can’t keep up?

You were nervous about getting started. You’re not sure you can do this. You wonder if maybe you should have gotten in better shape before you started CrossFit. The one-one-one instruction went fine, but now you’re in your first class, and you’re a little overwhelmed. All these people seem like they’re in incredible shape!

These are common feelings when you get started at CrossFit Augusta Downtown. Almost everyone goes through this. CrossFit is such an effective method for getting in shape, that most of the people in the classes are in pretty good shape because of it. Some are just getting started, but the ones that are in better shape are like that because they’ve been doing CrossFit. That’s what will happen to you, too, if you stick with it The thing is, they ALL had to go through what you’re going through. If you do these three things, you WILL be successful. We promise.

Show up!
The single most important thing is to show up at least 3 times each week. Come more if you’re capable and feeling fully recovered. Because without consistency, you won’t improve. Period. If you’re not showing up at least 3 times per week, then there’s not much we can do for you. Your body has to be challenged frequently enough to adapt to the new level of exertion. Make the commitment, make a plan, and follow through with it. Need some help? Let’s sit down and talk about goals – which will include how often you’ll be coming to the gym.

Scale!
Talk to the coach about scaling. It’s one of the great things about what we do. We scale every workout to ANY person. We can scale weights, reps, and movements to fit your level of fitness and ability. Our coaches are very skilled at helping you adapt the workout to your ability. Don’t be afraid to speak up, and don’t worry about feeling like you’re different. It’s a normal part of the process.

Don’t stop!
No matter what your level of fitness is, you’ll notice some big differences in 4-6 weeks if you’re doing the above things. So don’t stop. Imagine digging for a treasure, and then stopping just short of the prize. All that work and no reward. That’s what happens when you “try it out” for a week or two and then stopping. You were close to seeing results and then stopped. Commit and keep at it. Again, talk to us about your goals. We’ll help make sure you’re on the right track.

Finally, don’t compare yourself to everyone else. Just don’t do it. You worry that you can’t keep up and that you’re the only one who is struggling so much. But some day, there will be someone in the class that feels the same way you do now, but they’ll be talking about how they can’t keep up with you. We need you to tell them how it works. We need you to help encourage them to show up, scale, and don’t stop. They have so much to gain!
